Discover the life of the Kyburg noble family on the themed tour "High on Horseback and Yet Bankrupt." Your group traces the footsteps of one of the most powerful families in the region. Learn how aristocratic living, political struggles, and debt were intertwined.
From 1218 onwards, the Counts of Kyburg ruled over the city and castle of Thun. As successors to the Zähringers, they administered extensive lands in the Bernese Oberland. However, the lavish lifestyle with horses, knightly tournaments, and military duties came at a cost. The Neu-Kyburg family gradually fell deeper into debt.
