quiet, private tour
english speaking guide and a local expert
Enjoy a quiet, private tour where you can learn about the region and Switzerland. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide and a local expert who will tell you all about the origins of Zermatt and the people of the Canton of Valais (French name) or Wallis (German name) while enjoying the magnificent views of the Alps.
Ride Europe's second highest railroad and the continent's highest open-air railroad - the Gornergrat cogwheel train - up to the 3089-meter Gornergrat with incredible views of the Matterhorn accompanying you most of the way. Gornergrat is the starting point for many hikes as it is surrounded by 29 Alpine peaks that rise above 4,000 meters. Climb slowly to a 360-degree open-air viewing platform where you can see many of the highest peaks in the Alps, including the Monte Rosa peaks and glaciers, the highest place in Switzerland. When you have taken in the magnificent alpine scenery and so many unforgettable photos, you can enjoy refreshments and relaxation on the sun terrace of the Kulm Hotel, the highest hotel in Europe, or browse the special Gornergrat souvenir stores.
The tour continues with a short descent on the Gornergrat cogwheel train to the next station. Here you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Matterhorn. Start your hike on signposted paths and trails through a nature reserve. Along the way, note the geology of the area and the amazing variety of tiny alpine wildflowers. Stop at a beautiful little lake where you can take iconic photos of the Matterhorn reflected in the still water, or amazing selfies with the Matterhorn in the background.
Continue your hike and stare directly at the Matterhorn and the imposing peaks that surround it (but also remember where you're going!). Take refreshments on the sun terrace of the historic Riffelberg Restaurant, where Mark Twain stayed on his trips to Zermatt, and enjoy the more spectacular views of the Matterhorn.
Depending on your hiking enthusiasm and energy level, you and your guide can now determine how much more hiking you would like to do before finally re-boarding the Gornergrat train to return to Zermatt for good and finish the tour your most memorable Swiss experiences.
