Frequently asked questions
Stroller Lucerne Region - Lake Lucerne · answered by our editorial team
What is the Lucerne - Lake Lucerne Region known for?
The region has almost everything to offer what you need on vacation. Wonderful lakes embedded in beautiful mountain landscapes and in between baroque castles or pretty villages
Switzerland is said to have been founded on the Rütli in 1291 on a picturesque meadow by Lake Lucerne. According to tradition, representatives of the original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Obwalden took the Rütli oath here. In doing so, they rebelled against the claims of the Habsburgs
This was also the time of William Tell, whom you will meet here in the region at every turn. A popular destination for excursions is, for example, the Tells Chapel. It was built near the Tellsplatte. William Tell is said to have jumped onto this stone slab while fleeing from the bailiff Gessler. Right next to the Tells Chapel is the largest carillon in Switzerland, which consists of 37 bells. Every hour on the hour a song is played, which you can select beforehand by pressing a button.
What can I do in summer in the Lucerne - Lake Lucerne Region?
A tour by bike or e-bike around Lake Lucerne is a special experience. There are vantage points everywhere and the view of the lake is slightly different from each location. East of Beckenried you reach the waterfall of the Risleten Gorge. It falls a few meters over rocks into the lake and is (still) an insider tip. On the other side of the headland you come to the Rütli meadow. In summer, a first experience awaits you on the way to the mountains. Five of the mountain railroads in the Lucerne - Lake Lucerne Region alone are particularly spectacular These include:
Pilatus: the steepest cogwheel railroad in the world has been going up Pilatus since 1889. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
Titlis: the first Rotair aerial cable car that rotates 360 degrees during the ride has been around since 2014, and takes about 5 minutes from Stand to Klein Titlis. The first stage from Engelberg takes 16 minutes on the eight-seater gondola.
Rigi: the very first mountain railroad in Europe was put into operation in 1871 from Vitznau to Rigi Staffelhöhe. It takes about 20 minutes for the trip.
Stoos: the steepest funicular in the world runs at 110% inclination. Nevertheless, you are always on level ground during the ride.
Stanserhorn: a world novelty is the cable car running with an open upper deck. Your way starts at the middle station Kälti and takes about nine minutes. Up to there you will experience a nostalgic rack railroad. In total, the ride up to the Stanserhorn takes just under half an hour.
The mountain railroads to the Titlis, the Rigi and to Stoos are also on the way in winter and are waiting for you with a breathtaking snow-covered mountain panorama.
