How to read the rain radar

The map shows the last two hours as the radar measured them, then the forecast for the next 48 hours in five-minute steps. Use the slider to choose a time, or press “Play” to watch the rain move.

Light blue is light rain, dark blue moderate rain. Purple and pink mean heavy rain, the kind that falls in thunderstorms. The legend below the map shows the levels.

The radar often misses drizzle from high fog: the drops are very small, and the beam passes over the low, shallow cloud. In narrow Alpine valleys, mountains partly block the beam, so the readings there are less reliable.

Quick questions

Where is it raining, and where is the sun shining?
Today: dry, most sunshine in Lucerne, Bern and Chiasso.
How far ahead does the rain radar show?
48 hours. The map shows the radar's measurements up to “Now” and the forecast after that, in five-minute steps.
Where does the radar data come from?
From MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, as open government data. A new image is added every five minutes.
Why is it raining when the radar shows nothing?
It's usually drizzle from high fog. The drops are very small and the cloud so shallow that the radar beam passes over it.
