Thun is idyllically situated on the shores of Lake Thun and its outflow, the Aare. It is considered the gateway to the Bernese Oberland and is an excellent starting point for excursions into the mountains. Thun is connected to Interlaken by paddle steamer via the lake route. The historic town center lies about 1.5 km from Lake Thun on the Aare River. Above it towers Thun Castle with its distinctive turrets. The historical buildings and a long history of the region blend perfectly with a modern urban development and culture.

The excursion destinations around Thun include the Aare, Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains. The Haslirein cave and the stalactite caves in the Glütschbach valley can be reached by a pleasant hike. They St Beatus caves are located below the Beatenberg near Interlaken. Famous sights of the town are the castle of Thun from the 12th century and the town church from the 14th century with its octagonal tower.
Thun, with its location on Lake Thun and the Aare River, offers many water activities. Hikes and bike rides are available around the lake and in the mountains around Thun. Tandem paragliding is also very popular here, with views of Lake Thun and the Jungfrau region.
