About this place

It is one of the largest castle complexes in Switzerland and formed the lordly centre of the valley from the beginning of the 13th century until 1526. The castle was considered impregnable and was never conquered. Below the castle lies the Sta. Maria del Castello church, with a well-preserved late Romanesque cycle of frescoes.
