Description

The Vigezzina-Centovalli railway has linked Locarno and Domodossola for over 100 years. On this 52 km route, you’ll pass through deep gorges, rugged mountains, rivers, and waterfalls in less than two hours. Along the way, the train crosses 83 bridges and passes through 31 tunnels, traversing two countries.

The journey takes about 2:00 hours.

Useful information:

  • Suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, and dogs
  • During the autumn foliage season, Christmas markets, and the chimney sweep gathering in Santa Maria Maggiore, seat reservations are mandatory for individual travellers as well.

Traveling with a wheelchair

The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway offers a transport service. Every train set has a designated space for wheelchairs.

Travelers with disabilities are asked to contact the SBB Contact Center Handicap 48 hours before traveling:

  • Travel cannot be guaranteed without written confirmation.

Travelling with your dog

  • Bringing small dogs up to 30 cm is free as long as they stay in a carrier for the entire time. This carrier must be placed under your seat.
  • Dogs without a carrier and all dogs taller than 30 cm at the shoulder need a valid dog ticket: half the price of a 2nd class fare.
  • In Italy, dogs must wear a muzzle or be transported in a suitable bag.

  • Tourist ticket in 2nd class between Locarno and Domodossola for a return journey, valid on two separate days

  • One stopover allowed on the outbound journey and one on the return. Stopovers are optional.

Important information
  • Seat reservation is not included. It is recommended and mandatory for groups of eight or more.
  • Any extra charge of EUR/CHF 1.50 for the panoramic train is not included and can be paid directly on board.
  • Half-fare cards, junior cards, and children's companion tickets are not valid.
  • Bring: passport or ID
  • Check the timetable on the travel day via the SBB website or app. There you can also see when the panoramic trains run and when the regular trains operate.

The landscape, the railway's route, and the old town of Domodossola are all amazing. However, in train operations, there’s often some improvisation. While it has its charm, there’s definitely room for improvement.
