Description
The tour from Lucerne to Stans and up to the Stanserhorn offers a varied combination of a train ride and two very different mountain cable cars. Here are the individual stops on your tour:
- Train ride from Lucerne to Stans
From Lucerne to Stans, you take the train for about 20 min. The train route runs through the beautiful Central Switzerland and occasionally offers views of Lake Lucerne and the mountain panorama.
- Mountain ride with the funicular and CabriO cable car to the Stanserhorn
In Stans, a footpath of about 5 min takes you to the valley station of the historical funicular, which leads to the intermediate station Kälti. From Kälti, you continue with the innovative CabriO cable car – a double-decker aerial cable car with an open top deck. The cable car takes you to the summit of the Stanserhorn at an elevation of 1898 m above sea level. The entire ride between Stans and the Stanserhorn takes about 25 min.
- Stay at the Stanserhorn
Once you arrive at the top, you’ll be treated to a spectacular panoramic view of the Central Swiss Alps and several lakes. You can hike here, enjoy the view, or sample regional specialties in the revolving restaurant while the panorama turns.
- Return trip via Stans to Lucerne
The return trip is done the same way. You’ll ride back down with the CabriO cable car and the funicular to the valley in Stans. From Stans, you’ll take the train back to Lucerne.

Swiss Activities Tip
The 16 "Stanserhorn Rangers" offer free tours and provide exciting insights into the region's flora and fauna. They are available to visitors. Every day, a Ranger is out and about between the revolving restaurant and the summit from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Traveling with a wheelchair
- The trains and cable cars have low-floor entrances.
Traveling with a dog
- Bringing small dogs up to 30 cm is free, as long as they stay in a transport container the whole time. This must be placed under your seat.
- Dogs without a container and all dogs over 30 cm shoulder height need a valid dog ticket for each mode of transport.
Important Information
- Check the timetable on the SBB website or app on your travel day. Tickets cannot be refunded if you miss the last train.
- On busy days, you might need a boarding pass as a timeslot for your return trip from Stanserhorn.
- If so, you'll be informed while ascending and can get the boarding pass at the ticket counter on site.

The spectacular nature. For food, I recommend bringing your own container in my opinion (crisps, some salad, a serving board with cheese and chorizo, breaded meat, nuggets, cream, and stew). Be careful with the descent; I think it's poorly or insufficiently signposted! When you go up, you'll see some people with slips of paper at a stand = this is for the descent time. If you don't have a time and don’t grab one of those slips... you'll have to descend at 5:30 pm.
