Muotathal is a village in a valley surrounded by mountains east of Lake Lucerne. The river Muota flows through the valley and flows into Lake Lucerne at Brunnen. The village, situated at 610 m above sea level, has about 3500 inhabitants and is surrounded by unspoiled and idyllic nature. The landscape is characterized by alpine meadows, forests, mountains, waterfalls and the rushing waters of the Muota. Among the special natural spectacles is one of the world's largest cave systems, the Hölloch. It includes more than 200 km of karst cave system. The entrance is located above the hamlet of Stalden. In the Muotathal area, below the Pragel Pass, there is also the largest primeval spruce forest in Europe. Bödmeren covers 550 hectares and can be reached by a 3-hour hike. The largest karst area in Switzerland is the stony landscape of the Silberen. It is reached from the Pragelpass.
