Basel region
The center of the region is the cosmopolitan city of Basel, which is also the oldest university city in Switzerland. It is located on the Rhine and borders Germany and France. With over 40 museums, Basel has the highest density of museums in the country and therefore bears the nickname "Cultural Capital of Switzerland" not without reason. Baselland is characterized by the lovely Jura landscape and is ideal for cycling and hiking. The region is also rich in historical sites from Roman times and the Middle Ages.

“Quality day with valentine and airtime paragliding. Couldn’t have made my 30th any more special.”
“Absolutely amazing! I had a stunning glide and as a bonus got a massage!!!”
“5 stars for the mountain views, lucky with the weather and to be seated on the revolving part of the restaurant. Most of the cable staff were confused with this app/ticket, only one out of six knew to scan the QR code with a different app, the rest let us through the barrier with a couple of them saying we should have had a paper or different sort of ticket. No extra cost etc. but be warned. Waitress in the restaurant didn't recognise the ticket either so had to check with a manager but all good in the end. Meat and cheese board for 2 people as expected - four different ones of each, a couple of pieces of cheese, four slices of each meat.”

Frequently asked questions
Basel region · answered by the editorial team
In Basel there is the Augusta Raurica. What can I understand by this?
Augusta Raurica is a Roman city founded in 44 BC. It is located about 10 km east of Basel. In its heyday, about 20,000 people lived here on the south bank of the Rhine. Today the excavation site has become a place of encounter. In the archaeological park you can learn how people lived back then. You can participate in workshops to learn how ointments and oils were made back then. Or you can learn how the Romans once baked their bread or pottered their dishes. The impressive amphitheater on the site once held 10,000 visitors. Every year at the end of August, a huge Roman festival takes place here. Besides a museum, you can also visit a reconstructed city villa - the "Roman House".
What are the viewpoints in the Basel region?
The Basel region offers a lovely landscape with gentle elevations. In spring, the cherry trees blossom in many parts. From Reigoldswil, the panorama gondolas travel all year round up the Jura heights of almost 1000 meters to Wasserfallen. From the mountain station you can then ride down on a scooter in summer, while in winter the route becomes a toboggan run
Other vantage points in the Basel region are
- Schauenburgerfluh above Frenkendorf with a view of the Ergolz valley
- Belchenfluh at about 1100 m.a.s.l
- Sissacherfluh at 700 m.a.s.l. with a view of the Ergolz and Diegter valleys
- Chellenchöpfli at 1156 m.a.s.l. as one of the most beautiful views, often over a sea of fog above the Mittelland. It can be reached on foot from the Wasserfallen mountain station.
- Hintere Egg at 1169 m.a.s.l. as the highest vantage point in Baselland
- Sonnenbergturm near Maisprach with 99 steps and a view of the Fricktal and the Black Forest
- Forest observation tower Titterten (14 meters high)
- Wisenberg tower near Häfelfingen (24.5 meters high), at 1001 meters above sea level with a view of the Homburg valley
- Liestal lookout tower on the Schleifenberg (30 meters high) at 606 m.a.s.l. with a view of Basel and the surrounding area
- Remelturm near Kleinlützel on the French border (8 meters high) at 832 m.a.s.l. with a view of the alpine chain from Glarnerland to the Jura mountains
- Gempenturm (28 meters high), a steel construction on 5 floors with a view of Baselbiet, the Vosges and Alsace
What special tourist offers for families does the Basel region have to offer?
In addition to a visit to Augusta Raurica, a visit to the zoo - called "Zolli" among the people of Basel, or to an animal park is also a good idea. The Lange Erlen Zoo, for example, shows red and fallow deer, lynxes and wild cats
