Fog report of the latest sea-of-fog days

The days the MeteoSwiss network measured a sea of fog in at least half of the hours with the sun high – each with all its measurements.

How to read the fog map

Places in fog or high fog are white, places in the sun yellow. The summits that rise above the fog are listed under “Above the fog” with their heights.

Choose the day, then the hour with the slider. The fog level is the height the high fog reaches. It is an estimate, based on the places forecast to be in fog and those in the sun.

High fog forms in autumn and winter, when cold air collects over the Swiss Plateau with warmer air above it. It often clears around midday, but when the bise, a cold north-easterly wind, is blowing, it can last all day.

Quick questions

How high is the fog level?
Today 08:00: Hardly any sun anywhere in Switzerland.
When does the high fog clear?
It depends on the season and the wind. In autumn it often clears around midday or in the afternoon; in winter, and when the cold north-easterly bise is blowing, it frequently lasts all day. The map shows this hour by hour.
What's the difference between fog and high fog?
Fog lies on the ground, and you can see less than a kilometre. High fog is a shallow layer of cloud above the ground: it's grey underneath, but visibility is good.
