The Hölloch cave, located in the rural and beautiful Muotathal, is one of the largest explored caves in the world. An incredible 200 kilometres have already been mapped out. Underground water has shaped the cave system over more than a million years.
The guided route through the Hölloch is a truly unique experience because you can tackle an underground climbing path. You’ll climb, crawl, and ascend and descend ladders. Still, this excursion is perfectly manageable with average fitness!
At the Hölloch Center, you’ll meet your guide and possibly other participants. Then, the provider will equip you with everything necessary for the cave hike. Your guide will explain all you need to know for the experience. Throughout the tour inside the cave, you’ll continuously receive exciting information about the history, the rock formations, and the animals living in the cave. The underground climbing park features side passages, tight spots, ladders, deep sections, and much more. It’s a real adventure where you can admire impressive rock formations and stalactites!
In good weather, you can also marvel at sinter formations, which are only walked barefoot on to protect them, or discover the cave surface on a karst nature walk.
Practical Information:
Good news: Neither claustrophobia nor fear of heights is usually an issue in the Hölloch. The tightest spots are very easy to get through, and the darkness in the cave prevents any view into the depths.
