What areas can be found in the Lake Geneva region?
The Lake Geneva region includes hilly areas of the Jura, most of Lake Geneva and the Vaud Alps. In between are flat areas with large castles, numerous vineyards of national importance, cornfields and medieval villages
Which important cities are located in the Lake Geneva region?
The most important cities in the Lake Geneva region include Lausanne, Montreux, Nyon and Morges. Lausanne, picturesquely built on three hills, is the seat of the International Olympic Committee. It is also home to the Olympic Museum. The city is considered to be interested in sports and culture. From Lausanne you can see the Savoy Alps on the other side of Lake Geneva.
Montreux is known for its Freddie Mercury statue, the annual Montreux Jazz Fesitval, and nearby Chateau Chillon, a moated castle from the Middle Ages. It is the most visited historic building in Switzerland.
Where can I find other interesting destinations in the Lake Geneva region?
The amphitheater of Avenches is every year the showplace for big events. Besides an open-air rock festival and an opera festival, the Avenches Tattoo, the only military tattoo in western Switzerland, is also held here.
The small town of Yverdon-les-Bains is an important spa resort. It is situated between Lake Neuchâtel, the hills of the Broye and the Jura. The thermal baths come from springs containing sulfur and magnesium
Villars-sur-Ollon is a resort at 1300 m.a.s.l. in the Vaud Alps. On a terrace at 1200 m.a.s.l., Leysin is situated above the lower Rhone valley near Aigle. Besides cycling and skiing, the resort also offers beautiful views, for example of Mont Blanc.
