Via ferrata

A via ferrata is a climbing route over rocks made accessible to tourists. It is secured with iron ladders, iron pins and steel ropes. Iron staples are driven into the rock as steps. In this way, more and more difficult routes become accessible even to people who are not alpine climbers. The iron inserted into the rock thus serves on the one hand to secure oneself, but is also used to move along the rock.

In addition to suitable clothing, which in principle resembles hiking clothing, hiking or trekking shoes are necessary. Climbing or bike helmet, climbing harness and a via ferrata set are mandatory. Possibly an additional rope. You can also rent these utensils. Children under 40 kg must be additionally secured from above, because the fall brake is not activated for lighter persons. Attention: the via ferrata set consists of a band fall arrester and two safety arms. Climbing harness and helmet are not included in this set! If the shock absorber is triggered during a fall, you must replace your via ferrata set.

A via ferrata that is approved for beginners from the age of eight is the Brünnistöckli at Brunni in Engelberg. Within the Aletsch Arena there is the large climbing garden Adler with 18 routes where you can practice extensively. The Eppenbergsteig is also well suited for beginners and children. Other easy via ferratas are for example the Pinutsteig at Flimserstein, the Schweifinen via ferrata above Zermatt, the Partnunblick family via ferrata and the Simmeflueh via ferrata - Wimmis.
