An incredible trip that could have been perfect if, on the return journey, we hadn’t been crammed with more than 11 people per funicular cabin. In ours, besides 11 adults with bags and walking sticks, there was a two-year-old child and a big dog. Considering the cabin size, the temperature on July 16, 2025, and the full round-trip price of 64.- CHF, it’s disappointing to be packed like cattle by a rather unfriendly staff!… However, I want to acknowledge the kindness of one of the staff members who, seeing me give up trying to squeeze into a cabin at the intermediate station, offered to wait with me for the next funicular (40 minutes), which was just as full as the previous one!… Thanks to this same helpful staff member, we ended up three in the driver’s cabin since there was no space elsewhere to finish the ride. While this might be tolerable on a transport service that takes you to work (or to the ski slopes…), it’s much harder to accept when the main selling point of this transport is the view (and the vertical ascent). It’s impossible to see anything in such a crowded space, especially when you’re more focused on keeping your balance in a shaking funicular (which is normal), avoiding getting hurt or hurting others, not falling or making your neighbours trip over backpacks, sticks, etc., avoiding stepping on a poor dog’s paws or suffocating a little two-year-old that his dad had to carry for the first part of the descent because there was no floor space. Four members of my family were travelling, but we were separated at the intermediate station by the arrival of additional passengers. The first driver didn’t deem it possible to open his cabin to help with the crowd by taking in more people and easing the congestion. My family waited for me about an hour at the station. This did not spoil anyone’s good spirit or ruin the beautiful day. 😉
