Description

Together with your mountain guide, you’ll take the mountain lifts up to Schwarzsee mountain station. This is where the hike to Hörnlihütte begins; it takes around 2 hours. Hörnlihütte is open from July to mid-September, and you can stop for something to eat. The hike then takes you back to the Schwarzsee mountain station.

Requirements

  • T3 – challenging mountain hike: “The trail may not be clearly visible on the ground all the way. Exposed sections may be secured with ropes or chains. You may need to use your hands for balance. Some sections are exposed, with a risk of falling; the route may cross scree slopes or pathless rocky terrain. If marked according to Swiss Hiking Trails standards: white-red-white.” (Source: SAC hiking scale)

Swiss Activities tip

Hörnlihütte is located at 3,260 m above sea level on the Hörnligrat. Built more than 130 years ago, it can now accommodate up to 150 overnight guests. The restaurant seats 130. The route from Schwarzsee to the hut is marked. Safety ropes, chains and metal handholds help secure the route, which also includes steps. Once you reach the hut, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding valley.

The first ascent of the Matterhorn set off from here on 14 July 1865. Today, this route is considered the normal route to the summit.
