Tips from people who have been
From forums and reports, checked by us and put in our own words. Every tip names its sources.
Set off very early, ideally on one of the first trains: By 8.00 the trains from Interlaken are already full, and in Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald you can easily wait an hour or for several trains.
Tens of thousands want to get up the mountain at the same time on just a few trains.
For the downhill and super-G, the Girmschbiel opposite the Hundschopf is the slope with the best atmosphere: a big screen, a sea of flags, a stadium feel and a view of the Hundschopf, Minschkante and Canadian Corner. Travel via Grindelwald and the Eiger Express and walk the last stretch from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengernalp.
Visitors found the slope closer to the course than they had feared, and the organisers recommend walking because seats on the train are limited.
With skis and a ski pass you can move around more freely: From the start you can follow the upper part of the course on skis, and on Sunday the run down to the valley takes you right past the slalom start to Wengen.
Skiers get to places that people on foot can’t reach.
Watch out on the steep spectator slope: Badly placed snowboards slide down the slope, and many fans are already drunk in the morning.
On the crowded, steep snow slope, a loose board or someone slipping can hit others.
Dress for hours in the snow, above all with warm, waterproof winter boots, and bring a waterproof mat to sit on. Regulars even dig benches or entire sofas into the snow and cover them with tarps.
At the Girmschbiel you spend hours on the snowy slope at almost 1900 m, and there are no seats.
Do as many fans do and make your own fondue or raclette on the slope.
Bringing your own fondue is a tradition at the Girmschbiel.

Good to know, from official information and the press
- A sledge is worth having at the Girmschbiel: On the slope it serves as a fondue table, and after the race some people ride it down to Wengen instead of walking for around two hours. Set off before 17.00; after that, slopes and sledging runs are closed for the next race day. Source
- Buy your tickets online early, as there’s no box office on the day; the Saturday downhill regularly sells out. The train journey from Interlaken Ost is included in the ticket. Source
