Tips from festival-goers

The evening is worth it even without a ticket: On the Piazza Piccola on the Food+Music Street, there are free concerts by newcomers every day, and from 23.00 DJs play there. After that, the afterparty continues on the Piazza Magnolia.
The atmosphere on the Food+Music Street is free; only the Piazza Grande costs money.
Only bring a bum bag, handbag or gym bag up to A4 size; umbrellas, folding chairs, food and your own drinks are banned on the site. Bring a rain jacket instead, because even in Ticino it can pour during a concert.
Strict bag rules apply at Moon+Stars, and umbrellas are banned on the site.
Buy your ticket early: Prices are dynamic and rise the fewer tickets are left for an evening. Golden Circle and VIP are often the first to go.
For popular evenings, you’ll pay considerably more later or no longer get the category you want.
For big names, fans start queuing for a spot at the front around three hours before the concert begins. With a Golden Circle ticket you go through a separate entrance and get to the front more easily.
On the packed Piazza, from far back you often only see the screens.
Travel by train: From Locarno station it’s only about 500 metres to the Piazza, and after the concerts extra trains run towards Zürich and Lugano. By car you risk traffic jams at the Gotthard and around Bellinzona, and public parking spaces are in high demand.
Parking in Locarno is scarce, and the journey across the Alps gets congested in summer.
Book your accommodation early: During the festival, hotels in Ascona-Locarno are over 90 percent full and expensive. Otherwise, if you stay for the afterparty, you’ll miss the last extra train.
At the last minute, you’ll hardly find an affordable room during the festival.
Good to know, from official information and the press
- For children under 8, tickets for CHF 15 with guaranteed availability are sold at the Infopoint on site, and young people aged 8 to 16 pay half price. Nobody under 16 gets in without an accompanying adult, and pushchairs are not allowed. Source
