Tips from festival-goers

From forums and reports, checked by us and put in our own words. Every tip names its sources.

  • Gear

Pack rubber boots and a rain cape, even if the forecast looks good: When it rains, the Sittertobel turns into a mud bath (‘Schlammgallen’), and the boots in the festival shop then sell out fast. Bring a warm sleeping bag as well, because it usually gets cold in the ravine at night.

The weather in the ravine changes quickly, and replacements are hard to come by on site.

  • Camping

For a good tent spot you need to be there on Thursday when the gates open at 12.00; die-hard fans queue from as early as Tuesday. Avoid the slope below the Stars & Stripes bar: You’ll sleep on a slant there, and it’s loud.

The tent area is spread across the whole site, and there’s no right to a particular spot.

  • Getting there

Download your free SBB codes from openairsg.ch before you travel: Since 2024, the train journey to St.Gallen and back has been included in the festival ticket, and a free shuttle runs from Bahnhof Nord. There’s no shuttle from the Breitfeld car park; if you want to get home independently at night, come by bike.

The free train ticket has to be obtained in advance and is only valid together with the wristband or ticket.

  • Camping

Buy a bale of straw as a base for your tent and seating area; it’s sold right on the festival site. Old hands spread it out even in dry weather.

Straw keeps your spot dry and clean when it rains.

  • Where to stand

A dip in the Sitter is part of the experience: Go into the water upstream, ideally in the first days of the festival. Towards the end, the river gets dirtier and dirtier.

Downstream of the site and on Sunday, the water is no longer clean.

  • Food & drink

You’ll hardly need cash; payment is cashless across the whole site, and you can top up with an EC or PostFinance card. Bring a water bottle: The water at the washbasins is drinking quality.

It saves you lugging water around, and long queues form at the bars and the festival shop.
