Brunswick Monument

このスポットについて

The linguist, musician and horseman Duke Charles II of Brunswick was a true original. He was born in 1804 and was driven out in 1830 from his duchy, which lay in what is now Germany. While fleeing into exile through several European cities, he also reached Paris, where he made a fortune, and then settled in Geneva. He died in 1873 and left his huge fortune to the city of Geneva in return for a fitting funeral and a monument bearing his name. No mausoleum had ever been built in Geneva before, which is why the construction sparked considerable debate. The monument was finally erected in the Jardin des Alpes, the former natural harbour Port des Pâquis.
