This year’s Sommeratelier has been awarded to artist Anita Zimmermann. After numerous projects in which she invited regional artists into empty houses or buildings scheduled for demolition, with Leila Bock acting as curator, she thoroughly enjoys being creatively active herself in a three-storey house – and how! Since moving into the Remise in January, Anita Zimmermann has, in a sense, been on two tracks, working towards two exhibition goals: first for the outdoor space in St. Gallen’s city centre and second as part of the Sommeratelier in the Remise in Weinfelden. Anita Zimmermann is, in fact, a draughtswoman. For the Sommeratelier, she has set herself the task of swapping the eye of drawing for the eye of painting. Alongside sketches and preliminary studies, she has created large-format paintings, in a sense process-based exercises in learning and at the same time experiments with striking development potential. She does this with great seriousness and at the same time with wit and a wink. A boundless enthusiasm for inventing stories and a lively joy in creating are part of her trademark, as a draughtswoman and as a painter. Whether painting or drawing, similar guiding thoughts apply when deciding how and with what means art achieves a convincing effect, in terms of message, mood, colour and staging. Parallel exhibition in St. Gallen: from mid-August to mid-September 2026, printed flags will hang in the open air in Engel- und Metzgergasse.
