Louis Malle SCREENPLAY: Jean-Claude Carrière, Louis Malle (based on the novel by Georges Darien) DIALOGUE: Daniel Boulanger CINEMATOGRAPHY: Henri Decaë (color) MUSIC: Henri Lanoë CAST: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Geneviève Bujold, Marie Dubois, Julien Guiomar, Françoise Fabian, Marlène Jobert, Bernadette Lafont, Charles Denner RUNNING TIME: 2 h Original French version with German subtitles SYNOPSIS: Paris at the end of the 19th century. Georges Randal (Jean-Paul Belmondo) recalls, during a burglary…—the first one was out of anger toward his uncle and guardian, who deprived him of his inheritance, and because of his cousin Charlotte (Geneviève Bujold), whom he loved and would have liked to marry. Then he enjoyed breaking and entering so much that, with the help of Abbé La Margelle (Julien Guiomar), he became a very successful thief... As a loner, Randal consciously takes a stance against society. He is not an anarchist like some of his colleagues, but acts out of inner necessity, because he is unable to come to terms with the world around him. He continues to practice his trade even when he is very rich and could conform. “An entertaining, colorful adventure film set in turn-of-the-century costumes, which depicts the master thief’s eventful life through flashbacks. For attentive viewers, Malle has here, in an appealing package, revisited his old theme of the compulsive loner, the solitary opponent of the established social order.” (Film-Beobachter).
