It is not simply emptiness or «pleasant idleness.» Rather, it is a state of tension. Or, as psychologist Dr John Eastwood puts it: «Boredom is the unpleasant feeling of wanting to engage in a satisfying activity but being unable to do so.» Many see boredom as something negative to be quickly dispelled – with a smartphone, small talk, games, or other distractions.
