The city of Fribourg is located on both sides of the river Saane. It is a city founded in the Middle Ages. It still shows a large number of the neat houses built in the 12th to 15th centuries. More than 200 Gothic facades are still beautifully preserved. Within Switzerland, Fribourg is the city with the largest medieval city center. It is picturesquely situated on a rocky spur 50 m above the Saane valley. The 11 historic fountains were built over several centuries in the city and are a special sight. Visible from afar is the 74 m high bell tower of the Gothic Cathedral of St. Nicholas

The green Funi, a funicular railroad, is the last still functioning water ballast railroad in Switzerland. You can reach it in a few steps from the train station.
