What to do today for the weather

How to read the fog map

Places in fog or low clouds are white, places in the sun yellow. The summits that rise above the fog are listed under “Above the fog” with their heights.

Choose the day, then the hour with the slider. The fog boundary is the height the low clouds reach. It's an estimate, based on the places forecast to be in fog and those in the sun.

Low clouds form in the fall and winter, when cold air collects over the Swiss Plateau with warmer air above it. They often clear around midday, but when the bise, a cold northeasterly wind, is blowing, they can last all day.

Quick questions

How high is the fog boundary?
Today 06:00: No sea of fog at this time.
When do the low clouds clear?
It depends on the season and the wind. In the fall they often clear around midday or in the afternoon; in winter, and when the cold northeasterly bise is blowing, they frequently last all day. The map shows this hour by hour.
What's the difference between fog and low clouds?
Fog sits on the ground, and you can see less than a kilometer. Low clouds form a shallow layer above the ground: it's gray underneath, but visibility is good.
