Description
From Meiringen, you take the postal bus of line 162. On your way to Andermatt, you pass the Aare Gorge first. After Innertkirchen and Gadmen, you've already reached the Susten Pass summit. From up here, you can enjoy stunning views of Lake Stein and the Stein Glacier. Sometimes, the landscape appears almost mystical.
The pass summit is at 2259 meters above sea level, and there are about 800 meters of elevation to descend to Andermatt. Along the way, you'll also have a beautiful view into the valley with the Reuss River near Wassen.

Practical information:
- Suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, and dogs
- We recommend not to disembark during this route, as there are only two connections per day.
Swiss Activities Tip
The pass height (2259 m above sea level) marks the natural boundary between the cantons of Bern and Uri. The spectacular view extends to Lake Stein, the Stein Glacier, and the surrounding mountain landscape. You can best see the lake and glacier on the right side when heading towards Andermatt. The mountain road is 45 km long, with a gradient of 9% on both sides.
Bike
If you want to bring your bike on the Postauto, please note the following regulations:
- Check in the online timetable or app whether a route with a bike is indicated
- If so, please purchase a reservation ticket for your bike in addition to your regular ticket
Traveling by wheelchair
- Postbuses are generally equipped for wheelchair transport. The door for wheelchair access has a corresponding symbol.
- The Postbus between Meiringen and Andermatt features a built-in lift, operated by the driver (no prior booking needed). This is marked as HL in the Swiss Federal Railways timetable.
Traveling with Dog
- Small dogs up to 30 cm are free to bring along if they stay in a transport container for the entire journey. The container must be able to slide under your seat.
- Dogs without a container and all dogs taller than 30 cm at the shoulder need a valid dog ticket: half-price for second class or the minimum fare (dog day pass, dog pass). They must sit under the seat so as not to block the aisle for other travellers.
