Description
Embark on a journey to the Middle Ages and experience how the plague epidemic shaped and influenced the "Dark Ages". In the courtyard of the town hall you will meet your guide dressed as a plague doctor and start the tour from there. A guide, dressed as the plague doctor himself, tells you in scenic performances how medieval Rheinfelden suffered from the epidemic.
You will visit various locations that play a special role in the history of the plague in Rheinfelden. Especially the legends and customs around the Sebsatiani brotherhood are in the center of attention. Indeed, a tradition in Rheinfelden that continues to this day is to go from well to well singing at Christmas and New Year's Eve. In the Middle Ages, this was done to ask that the inhabitants of Rheinfelden be spared. At that time, people believed that contaminated wells were the cause of the epidemic.
Also in the church of St. Martin your guide will show you the altar dedicated to this brotherhood and the plague.
