Description

Line 631 of the Postbus takes you from Brig or Domodossola over the Simplon Pass. During this impressive crossing of the Alps, you’ll enjoy views of the sun terraces of Belalp, Riederalp, Rosswald, and Bettmeralp. You pass the impressive Ganter Bridge, discover historic sites like Stockalper Castle in Brig and the Simplon Hospice at the pass.

At the pass, you will see the nine-meter-high Simplon Eagle and find numerous hiking trails. During winter months, snowshoe trails, ski tours, and hikes in the Rothwald and Wasenalp areas attract visitors. The journey ends in Domodossola with Italian charm and notable historic buildings.

The trip between Brig and Domodossola takes approximately 1 hour and 44 minutes.

Traveling with a wheelchair

  • Postbuses are generally equipped to carry wheelchairs. The door for wheelchair access is marked with a relevant symbol.
  • The Postbus between Brig and Domodossola has an integrated lift operated by the driver (no prior booking needed). This is indicated as HL in the SBB timetable.

Bringing your bike

If you want to take your bike on the Postbus, note the following:

  • Check the online timetable or app to see if an R with bike symbol appears
  • If so, you must purchase a reservation along with your ticket for your bike.

Traveling with a dog

  • Small dogs up to 30 cm are free if kept in a transport container throughout the journey. The container must be placed under your seat.
  • Dogs without a container and all dogs over 30 cm shoulder height require a valid dog ticket: half the standard second-class fare for adults or the minimum fare (dog day pass, dog pass). They must sit under the seat to avoid blocking the aisle for other passengers.

Swiss Activities tip

It is said that Napoleon stayed overnight at the traditional Gabi at the Simplon Pass. At the beginning of the 19th century, Napoleon initiated the construction of the first passable alpine route over the Simplon. He transported troops and goods across the pass and built the Simplon Hospice for his soldiers there.
