About this place

The Lötschentaler Museum is a place for conserving cultural heritage and documentation, a space for meeting and exchange. Its collection focuses include alpine farming and agriculture, mountaineering and tourism, housing and household life, clothing, traditional dress and textile production, craft, handicraft and folk art, customs (masks, Herrgottsgrenadiere), faith and worship (liturgical vestments, popular religiosity) and regional imagery (painting, photography, advertising, posters). The permanent exhibition introduces you to a world full of traditions and customs. More than 100 wooden masks give you a complete panorama of the development of mask culture in the Lötschental from the 19th century to the present day. On your tour, you come across an impressive model of the Bietschhorn, splendid woollen blankets and a medieval archive chest… You encounter evidence of farming, domestic culture and clothing. And you discover how the land and its people are portrayed in photography and art.
