The Valais river Trient rises at the Trient Glacier in the Swiss Mont Blanc area, near the border with France. At Vernayaz, near Martigny, the Trient forms a narrow, deep and very impressive gorge, spanned by two bridges at a dizzying height. The Mont-Blanc Express also winds its way steeply up the Trient valley towards Salvan, Les Marécottes, Le Châtelard and on to Chamonix. The walk through the gorge takes no more than 20 minutes. It is also suitable for families with small children. The front section of the gorge crosses bridges and a reinforced footbridge. Along the way, you get valuable information about the geology, fauna and history of the place. The end of the walk rewards you with an impressive view into the Rhone valley and a great view of the waterfall «Pissevache», plunging 114 metres down. In 1779, Goethe wrote: «At last we came before the waterfall, which deserves its fame before many others». Getting there: by public transport or by car to Vernayaz.
