Tips from people who have been
From forums and reports, checked by us and put in our own words. Every tip names its sources.
Book a table for dinner, especially on Monday, otherwise you’ll hardly find a free one. After the Morgestraich, flour soup and onion and cheese tarts in one of the pubs are part of the ritual.
Many places are full or closed, and visitors without a reservation found nowhere to eat.
Look for accommodation in Kleinbasel; it was quieter there at night, and by tram and bus you can get anywhere quickly. With a camper: There’s no campsite in Basel, the nearest is Waldhort in Reinach, around 20 minutes to the centre on tram 11.
The visitor heard no parties there at night, whereas in the old town the drumming goes on until late at night.
For the Morgestraich, be there before 4.00, around 3.15 to 3.30, and avoid the big main squares. In smaller squares and side alleys or on the Münsterplatz, you’ll see the lanterns without the worst of the crush.
At 4.00 the city centre is packed, and you can barely get through on the main squares.
At the Morgestraich, darkness is the rule: take photos and film without flash, and do without fireworks and lights.
Flash ruins the effect of the lanterns and dazzles the masked participants.
Buy a Blaggedde (badge, copper CHF 10, silver 20, gold 50) and wear it where it’s easy to see. It funds the cliques, and anyone wearing one gets showered with confetti by the Waggis much less often.
The badge is your contribution to the Fasnacht and protects you from the biggest loads of confetti.
As a spectator, don’t come in costume or with a painted face; clown noses, jester’s caps, swaying arm in arm and bawling are frowned upon in Basel. Children may come in costume.
In Basel, there’s a clear divide between the active participants wearing masks and the audience, unlike at many other carnivals.
Good to know, from official information and the press
- Don’t pick confetti up off the ground and don’t throw it at the participants; and don’t throw the oranges and sweets handed out from the floats back or into the crowd. Source
