Tips from festival-goers
From forums and reports, checked by us and put in our own words. Every tip names its sources.
Be there on time for the campsite opening on the first morning: If you come early, you can pick the spots close to the entrance. But don’t pitch your tent before the official opening, or it will be removed.
Everyone wants to camp as close as possible to the entrance to the festival grounds, and a long queue forms as early as the morning.
Bring a sturdy gazebo and plenty of extra tent pegs, because the wind can blow hard in the Rhône valley. According to a female camper, cheap gazebos collapsed after a day or two; when there’s a storm warning, orange rotating beacons light up on the site.
Wind and thunderstorms come quickly in the mountains, and badly secured gazebos blow away.
Pack layers and a rain poncho: After hot days, thunderstorms with heavy showers can roll in. Drink plenty of water, especially on hot afternoons in the Rhône valley.
The weather in the mountains changes suddenly and violently.
Save money and time on toilets and showers: There are free toilets along the fences around the campsite, and the cold-water showers cost nothing. For the paid facilities, a multi-use card is worth it, as it lets you walk past the queue at the till.
The central toilet and shower block on the campsite charges per visit, and most of the queuing is for paying.
To transport your gear, take a pull-along cart or a green wheelie bin; the shuttle buses even extend their ramp for them. A flag on your tent helps you find your camp again in the tent city.
There’s a lot to lug around, and in the bustle of the tent city it’s otherwise hard to find your camp again.
You may bring in 3 litres of drinks per person once; after that, you refill your bottle at the free drinking water dispensers. There’s a deposit on PET bottles and cans, so it’s worth bringing them back.
Drinks at the bars are expensive, a litre of cocktail costs around CHF 45, whereas water is free.
