Description
Travel with this ticket to the highest summit in the canton of Lucerne: the Brienzer Rothorn. Or take a trip to the Planalp. You will be transported in a carriage with large panoramic windows by a historic steam engine up the mountain. The journey takes you through deep green forests and past typical Swiss pastures with cows. At the top of the Brienzer Rothorn, you will be greeted with breathtaking views of over 690 mountain peaks and the sparkling Brienz Lake.
Please note that during times of high visitor numbers or if a steam locomotive experiences technical issues, diesel engines may be used for passenger service. However, this is an exception. In case this happens, ticket refunds are not possible.
Your ticket guarantees a seat with free choice of seating. It’s especially worth arriving early at the station during peak season to secure a good spot.
Valley station: Brienz
In Brienz, you board the wonderful panoramic carriage and the historic steam locomotive begins your ascent up the mountain.
Intermediate station: Planalp
Throughout the entire ride, you enjoy spectacular views of the region. Discover the typical Swiss landscape with mountains, forests, and the beautiful Brienz Lake.
Mountain station: Brienzer Rothorn
After a stunning journey through lush countryside, you arrive at the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn. There, you will enjoy a unique panoramic view of the surrounding area.
Swiss Activities Tip
Brienz is a very cosy town with many highlights. Of course, this also includes the deep blue Lake Brienz. If you're already in the region, you should definitely explore the lake. There are many options for this. Take a refreshing swim at the beautiful Brienz beach, rent a boat or pedal boat, or join a boat tour.

Too bad the cable car to the Rothorn wasn’t running. I expected more meadows along the way, but the climb above was really beautiful.
Dear Francisca, Thank you so much for your review and valuable feedback. We have checked the information and confirmed that the Brienz Rothorn Bahn operates seasonally up to Rothorn Kulm. Between 9 May 2026 and 5 June 2026, the train runs only as far as the intermediate station Planalp. From 6 June 2026 until 25 October 2026, it runs again all the way to Rothorn Kulm. We could only complete half the trip due to bad weather conditions. Still, we loved it and will come back again next summer.
