This concert focuses on works by the contemporary Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Gjeilo’s neo-classical compositions enjoy worldwide recognition. Gjeilo’s choral works are characterised by their dense, atmospheric soundscapes, often made up of multi-part clusters and long-held chords. Gjeilo likes to draw on texts from the Latin church music tradition, which gives his works a timeless and spiritual quality. Alongside Gjeilo, works by Eriks Esenvalds (Latvia) and Eric Whitacre (USA) are also performed; their compositions are likewise among the highlights of modern choral music. Whitacre, whose style is often described as “neo-impressionist”, creates an aesthetic link to Gjeilo’s music.
