Nabil Al Raee travels from the West Bank to Europe to invite people to the theatre. In Trapped in Hope, he draws on his own biography and on his many years working as director of the Freedom Theatre to reflect on the lived reality of the Palestinian people and their struggle for independence. This documentary theatre work tells of dispossession, violence and the long-term effects of occupation. Palestinians do not have the privilege of being hopeless. The title names a central paradox of life under occupation: hope becomes both a necessity and a burden – a force passed from one generation to the next and keeping alive the belief that freedom remains possible. With great sensitivity, the piece reflects on hegemonic narratives of oppression: who gets to speak, who is heard and who has the power to shape history? Between personal memory and political analysis, Trapped in Hope opens a space where individual history and collective experience are inseparably linked. At the same time, the performance sees itself as a plea for art as a space for encounter and exchange. The theatre evening, conceived as a participatory encounter between the Palestinian theatre-maker and an international audience, relies on storytelling, listening and jointly holding contradictions.
