Science, technology and progress, but also the search for the spiritual and emotional, became driving forces for an art reduced entirely to lines, colours and forms. To this day, abstraction fascinates us in its many forms. At the centre of this exhibition with around 60 works are three important new acquisitions by Carmen Herrera, Wassily Kandinsky and Mark Rothko. Surrounded by further paintings and sculptures from the collection, they illustrate three different forms of abstraction – the breaking away from the object, geometric construction and colour field painting. With their transnational biographies, these artistic figures also show that abstraction has always been a global movement and still is today.
