On 4 August 1936, Hans Peter «Mani» Matter was born in Herzogenbuchsee. To this day, he is perhaps the best-known Swiss songwriter. He died in 1972, far too young, in a tragic car accident. His Bernese German chansons continue to shape the national music scene to this day. On the 40th anniversary of his death, Wilfried Meichtry wrote a biography in 2013.
