For centuries, Lichtensteig was the economic centre of the Toggenburg – a place of trade, innovation and production for national and international markets. But the structural shift from the 1970s onwards left clear marks: vacancies, unused industrial brownfields and a shrinking population shaped the townscape. Politics, the population and businesses developed strategies together to see vacancy as an opportunity – and to revitalise the old town. Today, Lichtensteig positions itself as «Mini.Stadt»: a confident small town that offers affordable space for ideas, creativity and encounters.
