Over deze plek

In 1566, the monastery of St.Gallen was separated from the town by a wall. The abbot then had a gate built for the monastery in 1570. It has survived to this day. The large stone relief on the east façade is the gate’s most striking feature. In the upper section, alongside the coat of arms of the pope of the time, the coat of arms of the old German Empire has also been carved into the stone. The middle section shows the coat of arms of Otmar, the first abbot and founder of the monastery. You can also make out Gallus, the city’s patron saint, with the bear. At the very bottom, two reclining lions and some intertwined ribbons decorate the relief. Today, the Karlstor houses the remand prison. The building belongs to the cantonal administration.
