Seven springs and the Simmenfälle

The Simme spring gushes out of a mighty limestone wall and consists of meltwater that has seeped down from the glacier between Wildstrubel and Rohrbachstein. At Alp Rezliberg, the water rises in seven springs and emerges from fissures in the rock in a 30-metre-wide fan. From «Sibe Brünne» (seven springs) came the name Sibne and later Simme for the river and the valley of the same name, Simmental. Below the alp, the river forms the Simmenfälle, around 200 metres high. The meltwater rushes down over a series of rocks several metres high and develops a particular force. From below, a narrow, rocky footpath runs along the water. The safest view of the foaming water is from Barbarabrücke, the place where the Simme was once diverted into its new channel. The Simmenfälle are five kilometres beyond the family-friendly place of Lenk im Simmental.
