Few solo concerts begin as spectacularly as Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. Four descending notes in the horns are answered by a tutti chord in the orchestra, before, after a second repeat, the solo piano enters with powerful ascending chords. A grand gesture right at the start – the broad, sweeping theme lies in the strings beneath. The pianist Boris Giltburg is regarded as an expert in the Russian repertoire of the late 19th century. Technical brilliance meets a wealth of tonal colours in Giltburg’s playing. You can also hear that in Alexander Glazunov’s melancholic Symphony No. 4, Sergei Rachmaninov’s airy Scherzo in D minor and Robert Schumann’s contrasting orchestral work “Ouvertüre, Scherzo und Finale” in E major. The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen also masters grand gestures – without neglecting the small detail, which it brings out vividly.
