Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps

The series comprises the remains of prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements dating from 5'000 to 500 BC. The settlements are underwater, on the shores of lakes and rivers, as well as in wetlands. Researchers from all over the world have uncovered well-preserved everyday objects of our ancestors throughout the Alpine region. The many organic materials such as wood, textiles, plant remains or bones have survived for millennia beneath the silt of the lakes, cut off from the supply of oxygen. Almost like in a book, the finds reveal what everyday life looked like at the time. Among other things, remains of clothing made from bark and leather, tools in stone, bronze and copper, grain stores as well as animal bones and, of course, the wood used to build the houses were discovered. In the past, pile dwellers lived almost everywhere around today's lakes in the Swiss Midlands. Numerous special exhibitions, museums, private collections and archaeological parks display their finds and let visitors immerse themselves in this long-gone world in reconstructed pile dwellings.
