What happens when a harmless pizza party turns into an existential chamber opera? Four people play cards and talk – about dental surgery, Brad Pitt, religion and questions of meaning. But everything is sung: every casual remark turns into music, carried by a hypnotic pop score that repeats and builds endlessly, without ever breaking into big musical gestures. On stage, the ensemble of the legendary Nature Theatre of Oklahoma meets the Austrian performers Julia Zangger and Tobias Kerschbaumer. Together they develop a style that sits between everyday observation, musical score and quirky choreography in a retro-contemporary style. Composer Robert M. Johanson appears in person as a pizza delivery driver and talks at length about the delivery business. Suddenly the situation shifts: one person disappears. Perhaps they are dead, perhaps somewhere in between. Between inn and gym hall, snatches of conversation, melancholy, dada and social criticism overlap – the banal tips into the existential. With Pizza oder eine Tür in der Dunkelheit tanzt nicht, the Nature Theatre of Oklahoma creates a theatre experience that is powerful in language and critical of language, delighting audiences and critics alike. From a weird pizza party comes that moment when the trivial becomes art, before the intellect steps in. The production story is just as unusual: Austrian director Julia Zangger initiates the collaboration with the ensemble. After production upheavals, the world premiere finally takes place in an inn converted into a theatre in Styria.
