From seedling to new variety - guided tour at Sativa in Rheinau

In the historic town of Rheinau, organic seeds of vegetables, herbs and flowers have been multiplied and bred since 1998. It started small in the old monastery garden of the former Benedictine monastery, and since then Sativa Rheinau AG has developed into one of Europe’s leading producers of organic seed. On the tour, you first get an insight in the nursery into the demanding processes of seed multiplication and the breeding of new vegetable varieties for organic farming. You also see the processing of a wide range of different seeds with special machines. The new wooden operating building near Klosterplatz combines state-of-the-art storage technology with successful aesthetics and integration into the monastery’s historic setting. In addition to storage, you see how the seeds are packed there and how quality is checked. Seed is the basis of all nutrition and, with its aim of producing ecologically and sustainably, Sativa Rheinau AG also operates in the tension between agricultural policy and increasing monopolisation. Tour starts at 10:30 at the Sativa nursery, Alleestrasse 101, 8462 Rheinau. Getting there by public transport: bus from Marthalen to the Rheinau Galgenbuck stop, 10 min walk to the nursery. After about 1 h, continue to the operating building 2 km away at Klosterplatz, 20 min walk or 5 min by car.
