Across the world, information is written (coded), encrypted and conveyed around the clock. Today, this data processing happens at lightning speed because it is mostly electronic and digital in a globally networked cyberspace. People are barely aware of the technical complexity of these processes anymore, because they now seem entirely natural. As long as everything works, no one thinks much more about it. But on the event horizon, the downside of information and communication technology, which is beneficial in itself, is already visible: an almost unquenchable thirst for energy, which brings overuse of raw material sources and, together with that, conflicts over sustainable resources. People in the information age will therefore have no choice but to solve the problem at its root. And to do that, you have to understand the nature of information substance precisely, both from a technical-physical and a cognitive-communicative point of view. In this respect, the new physics postulate called ‘it from bit’ helps, which treats information as coded energy and researches it accordingly. Put simply, this means that in future not only the quantitative amount of energy needed must be considered, but also the qualitative coding of any data concept. This applies just as much to analog information products as to digitally processed ones. The exhibition «Chiffren, Codizes & Cryptos – visuell verschlüsselte Informationen» shows this not-easy-to-understand subject through a comparative, above all slowed-down look at both a medieval and a more recent example: on the one hand the historic painted ceiling in the church St. Martin in Zillis. Its famous numbers, signs and symbols did not come about by chance, but were made with the arbitrary intention of conveying a targeted message. On the other hand, innovative artefacts by the Andeer picture-panel manufactory Stoffelsconception GmbH are on display. These products, technically described as PNFTs (=Physical Non Fungible Token), contain refined methods of information processing. Their special feature is that each one always has a measured vibration as its content reference. Like their classic counterparts, the newly designed picture panels have a strictly coded meaning.
