Altes Bad Pfäfers is the oldest surviving Baroque bath in Switzerland. Today, the historic building is a cultural sight of regional significance. This house steeped in history stands at the entrance to the Taminaschlucht, where the famous thermal water at 36.5° C springs forth. The history of Altes Bad Pfäfers begins in 1240, when two hunters discover a spring at 36.5° C in the Taminaschlucht. In its water, the monks of the nearby Benedictine monastery recognise a healing effect. Over the centuries, the baths grow into an internationally renowned spa. Bathing has not been offered at Bad Pfäfers for a long time, though. Between 1983 and 1995, it was comprehensively renovated. Today it houses a popular restaurant and is a venue for various cultural events. The Badgeschichte museum gives you an insight into the eventful history of the baths and bathing from the beginnings to the present day. The Kloster Pfäfers museum shows the close connection to the history of the baths and presents the Benedictine monastery as the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sarganserland, from its foundation around 730 to its abolition in 1838. The Paracelsus memorial shows the life and work of Paracelsus, who worked here as the first spa doctor at Altes Bad Pfäfers. The neo-Gothic bath chapel and the restored old kitchen are also well worth a visit. The spacious media library invites you to linger. Various media convey the history of Altes Bad Pfäfers.
