The Alpabzug in Plaffeien is a colourful spectacle that attracts over 10,000 visitors every September. More than 1000 festively decorated animals pass through the village, while around 20 herding families are celebrated for their hard work over the summer. The Alpabzug, which takes place this year for the 18th time, has revived an old tradition and become one of the region’s most important alpine festivals. Preparations for the Alpabzug begin early, as cleaning and decorating the animals is a demanding task. The joy is all the greater when the brightly decorated herds are welcomed by an applauding crowd. The Alpabzug marks the end of the four-month summering in the mountains, when the cattle herds return to the lowlands. In addition to the procession, Plaffeien offers a market with regional products, festival food and varied entertainment. The Alpabzug is not only a feast for the senses, but also an important cultural event that expresses people’s bond with their tradition and nature. Every year, the event attracts both locals and tourists and is a vivid example of Swiss alpine culture.
