Description

A spectacular glacier hike awaits you on the route between the mountain station Trockener Steg to the lower Theodul glacier. Accompanied by a guide, you can prove your fitness and surefootedness and explore the plateau of one of the largest mountain ranges in the Swiss Alps.

The Lower Theodul Glacier is a valley glacier and has a length of 7km and is on average about 1km wide, it belongs to the system of the Gorner Glacier.

The mountain tour is a 5-6 hour guided tour and spectacular experience even for children!!

Meeting point: Matterhorn Express valley station.

At the valley station of the famous Matterhorn Express you will meet your mountain guide. If you book a group tour, you will also meet your group here. You will take the cable car together to the station Trockener Steg, where the glacier hike begins.

Glacier hike: Lower Theodul Glacier.

After a leisurely walk into the gorge, the adventure begins! A 10-meter abseil heralds the via ferrata. After that, you'll go over rocks, tree trunks, ladders, tyroliennes and footbridges deep into the gorge and over roaring rivers. Your guide will always make sure that you get over every obstacle safely. After this great climbing experience, it's a leisurely hike back to Zermatt.

practical information:

  • Good health is a prerequisite for the tour
  • Requirements: for people who are already familiar with alpine hiking, good surefootedness and orientation are necessary
  • Small backpack (max. 20L) with drink and little but nutritious food, take hiking poles if desired
  • Do not forget sunglasses, cap/sun hat and sunscreen!
  • 2-3 days before the tour you should call to discuss weather conditions and details
  • Conducted from June to mid-October

From the Gandegg hut you have a unique panoramic view of the Lower Theodul glacier as well as Gorner glacier and the 4000m peaks with the Matterhorn in the center. In the hut you can taste authentic Valais specialties and selected regional wines.

The glacier hides many treasures of the Stone Age, which are revealed with the retreat of the ice
