Museum der Kulturen Basel
About this place
Museum der Kulturen Basel is one of the most important ethnographic museums in Europe. Its world-renowned collection includes more than 340'000 objects and around 300‘000 photographs. To present parts of it again and again and reposition them, several temporary exhibitions are shown each year alongside the two permanent exhibitions. The focus is always on topics with a contemporary connection. As a place for discovery, experience and insight, the museum allows visitors to reflect on what is familiar and reinterpret it. In other words, to see the world through different eyes. Not only the concept is modern, but also the architecture: the striking folded attic storey by Herzog & de Meuron forms an extravagant extension to the building erected in 1917 by the architects Vischer & Söhne. Yet it still fits harmoniously into the medieval cityscape.
