Festungsmuseum Heldsberg
About this place
The artillery works at Heldsberg near St.Margrethen offer a special kind of outing. From the Second World War until 1993, it was part of the border fortifications in the Rhine Valley. Its position meant its four 7.5 cm fortress guns controlled, in the north, the southern end of Lake Constance and, in the south, the Rhine crossings in the Rhine Valley as far as Montlingen. The barrier at the Stoss near Altstätten secured the crossing into Appenzell. The Festungsmuseum Heldsberg also now includes the impressive underground command bunker of Border Brigade 8, Haslen AI, which uses more than 30 rooms to explore the Cold War. At the Heldsbergstube and the Soldatenstube “Kästlis” Haslen, you can enjoy drinks and food. Changing special exhibitions add to the military history museums.
